Gambling; can it become a drug?

Excessive gambling is similar to substance addiction in a number of ways. We have increasingly come to see it as a "behavioural" addiction or an addiction "without substances". The common features of addiction, with or without substances, include the following:  cravings to carry out a certain behaviour; loss of control with unsuccessful attempts to stop or limit the activity; negative consequences arising from one`s actions. It is also common to experience a gradual increase in the behaviour (the phenomenon of tolerance). Furthermore, tension and/or nervousness may arise when the activity cannot be undertaken (the phenomenon of withdrawal).
